Current Developments

2004 was a year of strong development activity. The $107,449,403 in new building construction was the second highest value in 10 years. Building construction is estimated to reach $134.7 million annual building value. The total number of dwelling units constructed in 2004 rose to 534 from 283 in 2003, which was considered a turnaround year.

Currently the City of Kamloops, Development and Engineering Services, has 90 active subdivisions applications comprising over 1000 new lots. To put this number into context, 881 lots were created in the seven-year period from 1998 through to 2004.

Kamloops Centre for Water Quality

The federal and provincial governments are contributing more than $23.3 million towards the City of Kamloops $48.5 million water treatment project. The water filtration plant at River Street provides safe, high quality drinking water for our city.

Tournament Capital

The City of Kamloops $37.6 million Tournament Capital Facilities Expansion Project is well underway thanks to a recent $6 million grant from the Province of B.C.  The $1.4 million, 1,500-seat new Norbrock Baseball Stadium opened on August 25 hosting the Men's Canadian Baseball Championships.  Currently, construction crews are on budget and on schedule for a $10 million Olympic sized ice-sheet and $20 million track and sport-medicine facility.

Sun Rivers

Construction of the Sun Rivers Resort Community, located on the Kamloops Indian Reserve across the South Thompson River from the city, is still underway. The community will consist of 2,000 residential units, a school, park facilities, a civic centre and a hotel overlooking a championship golf course.  Sun Rivers is being hailed as a blueprint for the future of community development in B.C.

Stump Lake Ranch

The new owners of Stump Lake Ranch, an 80,000 acre working cattle ranch 25 minutes south of Kamloops, have embarked on a major real estate development.  Waterfront lots ranging in size from 3 to 12 acres are currently being sold.  World-class guest ranch facilities are also available offering a taste of ranch life to visitors.

Future Developments

BCNET

BCNET will be providing Kamloops with fiber-ready capability.  This will ensure capacity upgrades for higher-performance networks. By 2010, BCNET has mapped out gigabit light paths between cities, providing more bandwidth and speed than ever before.

Six Mile Ranch

the Six Mile Ranch development is to include a 27 hole golf course, a 977 unit housing development, three condo-hotels with up to 400 units, a 50-unit guest ranch, a 100 berth marina and continue a 200-head cattle operation with a gated theme park. The Ranch will be located 20 Miles North of Kamloops.

China Business

The first agreement, the Exchange Protocol Agreement, was signed between City of Kamloops then Mayor, Mel Rothenburger and Vice Mayor Jin of Changing in the summer of 2005.  It outlined the purpose of Kamloops and Changing, China (district of Beijing) initiating the path to international trade in new market development.  A Tourism Exchange Agreement and Business Exchange Agreement were also signed.

With the signing of these three agreements now in place, Kamloops is looking to be an active business partner with China.
