Community Services

Municipal Services

RCMP and Community Policing

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police provides policing services in Kamloops. 140 regular members work out of the main detachment and two Community Policing offices, one on the north shore and one downtown. The Kamloops RCMP were the first in Canada to implement drug free zones around high school programs now offered in high schools across the country. The RCMP also operates a mountain bike squad, allowing them to more easily maneuver in crowds during special events.

Kamloops and District Crime Stoppers is a completely anonymous program that is not attached to the RCMP.  They work in association with the public, the media and the police to solve crime and make Kamloops a safer place to live.

The Customer Care and Patrol (CAP) Team are the ambassadors to the City of Kamloops.  They provide a variey of services such as greeting and welcoming tourists, safety patrols with specialized training and equipment observing, recording and reporting any undesirable activities in the Downtown area, promoting local business, and supporting and organizing local events.

Fire and Rescue Services

Kamloops Fire and Rescue Services has 107 full time and 45 auxiliary fire suppression personnel operating from six stations located in Sahali, Valleyview, Westsyde, Rayleigh/Heffley Creek, Dallas/Barnhartvale and the North Shore.  The department responds to fire suppression calls, injury accidents, rescues, dangerous goods/hazardous materials emergency responses, wild fires, water rescues and rope rescues.

At their training facility, the department works with private industry to offer a variety of training programs, including natural gas emergency response and fire suppression.  In addition, the department offers fire prevention programs within the community.

For emergencies outside city boundaries, there is the provincially funded Kamloops Search and Rescue.  Currently, there are over 30 volunteers with this organization.  Services include searches, rope rescues, water rescues and injury accidents.

Health Services

Health Care

Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) is the major acute care facility for Kamloops and the regional referral hospital for the surrounding region.  The hospital has 228 acute care beds.  RIH is one of over 50 agencies providing health care services in Kamloops including two extended care hospitals, two health units (South Central and North Shore) and five community health centers two on the North Shore, two in Sahali, and one in Valleyview.  The health care industry is a major employer in Kamloops.  RIH alone employs 2,117 people.  Approximately 150 physicians service the Kamloops area.

Ambulance

The British Columbia Ambulance Service operates both full and part time in Kamloops.  One of their 3 regional dispatch centers is located in Kamloops which services the Northern Interior.

They also have two stations in the city- one on the South Shore and one on the North Shore.  The Ambulance Service offers tours and ride along programs for high school students who are interested in entering the field.  As well, the Ambulance Service has a mountain bike squad that attends community events.
