Venture Kamloops is currently undertaking a number of strategic economic development projects. The objective is to be aware of additional diversification and job creation opportunities as well as general economic trends that may impact the local Kamloops economy.

2006

Intermodal Inland Container Facility Study - Identifies container sorting opportunities for the Kamloops Region through the development of an Intermodal Opportunity Analysis

STATUS - Kamloops, BC - Venture Kamloops and the Thompson Rivers University
Advanced Tcontainer bridgeechnology Centre hosted an information and partnership
roundtable meeting on Monday, October 2nd, 2006, to release the results of their Intermodal Opportunity Analysis Research Study and discuss its implications for future planning. The workshop provided a detailed presentation on the study's finding and an update from the Provincial Government regarding their intermodal study.  Currently, Venture Kamloops is forming an industry steering group of community leaders and stakeholders to plan, partner and promote the inland intermodal container facility in Kamloops.

The purpose of the Intermodal Opportunity Analysis Preliminary Research Study is to better understand the following questions:

 

  • What are the economic requirements such as location, transportation infrastructures, and access to markets for these facilities to exist?
  • Who develops these facilities: private sector or governments?
  • What do they require to be viable: population size, labour force, size of land, transportation connections, shipping volumes, and distribution activity?
  • What are the capital requirements?
  • How big are these facilities?
  • What land parcels are suitable for an intermodal facility within 50 km of Kamloops?
  • How interested are the rail carriers in servicing this type of facility?
  • What is the recommended action plan for Kamloops?
